Hello everyone. Today I want to discuss “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and find out if there is a hero in the book.

“Hero” is a strong word. Whom can we consider a hero? A firefighter? A nurse? An engineer? Everyone has their standards, I guess. But what about “Gatsby”. Are there any heroes? Of course. The most obvious and the easiest one — Gatsby himself. Why so? Well, firstly, it’s his background. Not only he served in the army, but he also went through a lot as citizen. Oxford, his parents, fake friends, Daisy, at last. Secondly, his today’s actions. He is a fighter, a true fighter. He stands up for everyone and everything he loves. He sets free himself and Daisy by talking with Tom. He takes responsibility for the car accident, which actually happened because of Daisy. This makes him a hero at least in Daisy’s eyes. But anyway, I would call Gatsby a hero.

And here are some new words, as promised:

cynically [‘sɪnɪkəlɪ] цинично

tenderness [‘tɛndɚnɪs] нежность

simultaneously [saɪməl’teɪnɪəslɪ] одновременно

obligation [əblɪ’geɪʃən] обязанность

That was all I had today for you. Thank yor for reading. Stay tuned.
